Henry Pratt McKean was born on 3 May 1810 at Philadelphia, PA; Spent youth in Phila and ws for a time of the class of 1826 at Univ of PA, dropped, entered the county house of his grandfather, Henry Prtt, one of the best known and most successful Philadelphia merchants. Later, he hundertook his own account important c commercial operations with South America and Mexico, and extended these until they embraced active correspodence and trade witht eh Est and West Indies, China. His Maternal grndfather died in Philadelphia in 1838 leaving, in common with the other heirs, a portion of an ample fortune.
Purchased an estate toward Germantown, named it Fernhill, removed the house of Mr. Clapier and built in its place a fine stone residence, the square tower surmounting which is a land-mark on all approaches from the direction of the city. He was the son of
